Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
Using Tinnitus Retraining Therapy To Ease The Constant Ringing In
Ears
Tinnitus retraining therapy is a form of counseling that is aimed at the
sufferers of tinnitus in order to get them to move their focus or attention from the ringing sound to other more
peaceful sounds around them. Many people who have used tinnitus retraining therapy found it to be a tinnitus treatment that works for them.
How Does Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
Work?
As the name suggests, tinnitus retraining therapy is a form of therapy or counseling that
basically involves the tinnitus sufferer having to retrain or learn to become used to other sounds around them in
order to distract them from the annoying sound that is produced by having tinnitus.
There is no specific amount of time that it should take for tinnitus retraining therapy
to work; everybody is different and some people have noticed a major improvement in as little as 7 days while for
others it has taken months. This is not to imply that the effects of tinnitus are 'all in your head' - far from it!
It is just that with tinnitus retraining therapy, we can retrain our brain to stop focusing on the buzzing sound
and move our attention to other sounds around us that are more appealing, thus drowning out the effects of
tinnitus.
Your therapist will give you a sound therapy CD (such as nature sounds) and you will be
instructed to listen to it periodically, particularly before falling asleep at night. For tinnitus retraining
therapy to be successful you cannot rush it and you must also ensure that you do not listen to sounds that mask the
effects of tinnitus - you cannot possibly retrain the brain to take your attention from one noise and focus on
another when the 'first' noise cannot be heard in the first place! Another important point to remember with
tinnitus retraining therapy is that you should try to avoid silence and listening to the 'wrong' kind of
sounds.
Pros And Cons Of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
Tinnitus retraining therapy is considered a wonder treatment for most people as it does not
involve drugs of any kind. But it does require a lot of patience on your part.
Tinnitus
retraining therapy is not a quick fix solution for the effects of tinnitus but given time the treatment will
make your life a whole lot better. It is also quite an expensive form of treatment for tinnitus but personally I
could not see this as being a major issue, especially when you know it has been proven to work for many
people.
